Designing for Safe Foundation Works in Public Environments – The Dutch Guideline
Designing for Safe Foundation Works in Public Environments – The Dutch Guideline, is a free to attend, 45 minute webinar which is taking place on Thursday 3rd September at 10am BST / 11am CET.
Chaired by Jaap Estie (EFFC Secretariat and Director at NVAF), this virtual event will feature a presentation from Hans Versteeg (Owner and Director of HVE Services BV) and will discuss the Dutch Guidelines for Foundation Works in Public Environments.
ABOUT THE WEBINAR
The successful delivery of foundation works in public environments requires careful consideration of occupational health and safety from the earliest stages of project development. Decisions made during the design phase, particularly regarding the selection of foundation techniques and construction methodologies, have a direct influence on the risks encountered during construction and the safety of both site personnel and the surrounding public.
This webinar will explore the Dutch Guideline for Foundation Works in Public Environments, providing an overview of its principles, practical application, and relevance to modern infrastructure and development projects. Particular attention will be given to the hazards associated with foundation works in public spaces, including exclusion zones resulting from the risk of machinery overturning, falling equipment, foundation elements, and their components. The session will also examine how different foundation techniques influence the size and nature of these hazard zones and the implications this has for project planning and delivery.
By demonstrating how construction methodology and safety considerations can be integrated into the design process, the webinar will highlight opportunities to reduce risk, improve constructability, and support safer and more efficient project execution. Attendees will gain practical insight into how early design decisions can enhance collaboration between designers, clients, and contractors while contributing to improved safety outcomes and more efficient execution of foundation works in public environments.
Who Should Attend?
This webinar is particularly relevant for:
- Structural and geotechnical designers
- Consulting engineers
- Health and Safety professionals
- Client representatives and asset owners
- Project managers
- Construction and site managers
- Environmental and stakeholder managers
- Foundation contractors and specialist subcontractors
- Anyone involved in the planning, design, management, or execution of foundation works in public environments
Participants will gain practical insight into how early design decisions influence construction safety and how the Dutch guideline can help improve collaboration between designers, clients and contractors while reducing risks throughout the project lifecycle.
Speakers

Jaap Estie (webinar chair)
Jaap Estié is the director of the NVAF (Dutch Association of Foundation Contractors) and, since the beginning of this year, also the secretary of the EFFC.
Previously, Jaap was the director of a foundation company for 14 years, and prior to that, Jaap pursued a career in the auditing and accounting world.

Hans Versteeg
Hans Versteeg is an experienced piling professional from the Netherlands, with a career spanning the full lifecycle of foundation engineering projects.
He began as a heavy construction machinery operator in road construction before transitioning into the piling industry, where he progressed through roles including site operative, machine operator, site manager and project manager. Now working as a freelance project manager, Hans oversees international projects for contractors and clients, ensuring safe, efficient delivery.
Hans has also contributed to key NVAF guidelines, including those on foundation work in public environments and safe lifting, bringing valuable practical insight to their implementation.
